Cross breeding of different domesticated lines as a simple way for genetic improvement in small aquaculture industries: Heterosis and inbreeding effects on growth and survival rates of the Pacific blue shrimp Penaeus (Litopenaeus) stylirostris ArchiMer
Goyard, Emmanuel; Goarant, Cyrille; Ansquer, Dominique; Brun, Pierre; De Decker, Sophie; Dufour, Robert; Galinie, C; Peignon, Jean-marie; Pham, Dominique; Vourey, Elodie; Harache, Yves; Patrois, Jacques.
Two populations of the Latin American shrimp Penaeus (Litopenaeus)stylirostris domesticated in Hawaii and in New Caledonia were previously shown to be genetically differentiated and proven highly inbred. In New Caledonia, where different Vibriosis affect shrimp production and antibiotic use is banned in growing ponds, the Hawaiian population was introduced to increase the allelic variability available for local shrimp farmers and start a genetic improvement program. Growth and survival rates of the two pure populations and the two-way F-1-hybrids obtained by breeding Hawaiian animals with New Caledonian animals were assessed in several simple experiments (earthen ponds, floating cages and experimental infection challenges) during two years on two...

Genetic improvement strategy in small aquaculture industries : the new caledonian shrimp experience ArchiMer
Goyard, Emmanuel; Goarant, Cyrille; Brun, Pierre; Herlin, Jose; Pham, Dominique; Beliaeff, Benoit; Harache, Yves; Loubersac, Lionel; Patrois, Jacques.
Shrimp farming in New Caledonia relies on the culture of a domesticated strain of Litopenaeus stylirostris introduced from Mexico at a time when genetic principles were of little or no consideration. Since then, advances in agriculture and for some aquatic species of importance led caledonian shrimp farmers to reconsider the appropriateness of a genetic improvement strategy adapted to local biotechnical and economical constraints. This questioning involves many different and interrelated aspects: scientific and technologic (genetics, biosecurity, quarantine, ), economic and organizational (financing, diffusion of genetic improvement) and pedagogic (awareness of farmers). Local institutions, producers associations, research centre and sanitary services...

La pisciculture marine : un secteur industriel en émergence ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe; Harache, Yves.
In a general context of low progression, European aquaculture has been characterized by the development of intensive fish farming. The most notable fact is the recent increase in intensive salmonid farming, with a turnover of almost two million ECU. More recently, the intensive farming of sea bass and sea bream has increased very rapidly in the Mediterranean Basin, although on a more reduced extent. Although research has started as soon as the seventies with a strong public incentive both for salmon, sea bass and sea bream, the development of these different types of aquaculture has not been done at the same pace. Some elements of sectorial dynamics are analysed such as research planning and financing, organization of the production and public policy. For...

L'élevage des salmonidés migrateurs amphibiotiques en Amérique du nord ArchiMer
Harache, Yves; Boulineau, Jean-jacques.
In this dissertation, we aimed to provide an outline of the projects carried out on the northern American continent in the culture of amphibiotical migratory salmonids, gathering information in order to apply them to a river repopulating project and contribute to the development of French aquaculture.

Marine cage fish farming ArchiMer
Espeut, P.; Harache, Yves; Lemarie, Gilles; Ricard, Jean-marc.
Marine capture fisheries in Jamaica is primarily artisanal in nature ansd is conducted maiinly by fishermen operating from canoes. Approximately 95% of these fishermen operate on the coastal shelf and its associated banks. The commercial species harvested comprise bottom-dwelling, coral reef species and free swimming species of finfish. Other fishery resources of commercial value include marine shrimp, conch and lobsters. Catch statistics are not available for all species, but the Department of Fisheries reports a slight decline in fishery production with production decreasing from 16 milion lbs in 1990, despite the fact that fishing efforts have doubled. Over this period the number of registered fishermen has grown from 12 000 to 16 000, al of whom are...

Repeuplement et soutien aux ressources halieutiques - Etat des connaissances et recommandations ArchiMer
Gerard, Andre; Thouard, Emmanuel; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Gaignon, Jean-louis; Antoine, Loic; Harache, Yves; Veron, Gerard; Perez, Jose.
The repopulating of aquatic environments has long been based on the idea that in order to increase halieutic resources, one just had to artificially increase the number of fish in their early stages in marine or fresh water environments. Therefore, as the knowledge on the reproduction of some species and the mastery of their artificial reproduction was growing, the capacity to produce large amounts of eggs or fries from different fish or mollusc species became a reality. Controlled reproduction and the availability of large quantities of fertilized eggs, and then of larvae showing, in captivity, a greater survival capacity than naturally reproduced ones, lead to an increase of repopulating attempts through the release of fries or young fishes raised in...

Saint Pierre et Miquelon evaluation technique et economique des filieres aquacoles existantes ArchiMer
Harache, Yves; Gilly, Bernard.
This document is meant to contribute technical and economic factors that make it possible to give an assessment of the experiments in salmon farming conducted on St Pierrre and Miquelon and to envisage strategies for the future. Before participating in a potential transfer of this activity to the professionals, IFREMER's Department of Living Resources requested the RA and SDA departments to conduct a study on salmon farming potential in the archipelago with regard to ecological, technical and economic constraints. By reason of the short time period, a certain number of points were not delved into; they could be the subjects of more in-depth studies by specialist organisations. The appendices to this document evaluate the history of the program (appendix...

The development of marine fish farming in europe : a parallel with salmon culture ArchiMer
Harache, Yves; Paquotte, Philippe.
This paper is aimed at analysing the similar trends and different constraints which influence marine fish farming of new species such as sea-bass, sea-bream and turbot in Europe in comparison with the Norwegian salmon farming success. In a general context of low progression, European aquaculture has been characterised by the development of intensive fish farming. The most notable fact is the recent increase in intensive salmonid farming, with a turnover of almost 2 millions Ecu. More recently, the intensive farming of sea bass and sea bream has increased very rapidly in the Mediterranean Basin, although on a more reduced extent. Turbot farming is developing slowly too on the French and Spanish Atlantic coast, taking benefit of the temperate climate in...
